HOW STRIVE DATA INCREASES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PERIODIZATION TRAINING

JANUARY 17, 2022  |  Periodization is an extremely effective form of training that focuses on periods of progressively increasing stress followed by short periods of rest.  Active recovery workouts and periods of rest are as important as the periods of intense training, as it’s during this time that muscle fibers torn during training are able to rebuild so that they can handle similar stress in the future. 

But how much intensity is enough, and how much is too much too soon?  It’s a difficult question to answer, as each individual athlete is unique and their bodies respond differently.  Coaches and trainers are often left to rely on intuition or external cues to help guide these training decisions.  To date, technology like GPS tracking systems can provide a fair indication of external load, but there has been no technology to help trainers understand how each individual athlete is responding.

Logan Ogden, Director of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Utah, has been using STRIVE to help guide training decisions when it comes to periodization.  “Our coaches have a really good grasp of periodization, so when I bring ideas with data to them, they are on board on how it needs to work and they understand what we need to do. STRIVE’s muscle load metric is a critical component to understanding the results of longitudinal programming.  It removes the guesswork and allows trainers and coaches to accurately evaluate how training stress is affecting each individual athlete.  It’s also a vital tool in understanding how muscle fatigue may be causing their athletes to overcompensate, which can quickly lead to injury.

“If the average muscle load for preseason is ‘X’ then we need to be above that in my periodization to make sure we are prepared, and so we are staying injury free as we get ready to go into tournament time,” says Ogden. “There’s a fine line between making sure we are fresh and detraining… we are really trying to peak right before the conference tournament.  STRIVE gives us a clear indication as to where we are and what we need to do to get everyone to that point.”
